Online education has changed the face of education worldwide and introduced a whole new era of learning for traditional and non-traditional students. Online education, unlike formal education, offers a way to reach a wider audience, particularly non-traditional students. For others, it proposes a new pedagogical tool that has the potential to transform the learning process. And for others it is an inexpensive way of achieving a higher education degree.

The use of online education has grown significantly in this day and age. In fact, with the expansion of the Internet, online education has experienced an upward trend.
The most important advantage of online learning for a student is that physical presence in a classroom is not required. Students who are not able to travel due to responsibilities such as job or living in a remote place can easily continue their education online.

Online education is also a great opportunity for the physically handicapped that can enroll in online courses without attending a physical campus.

While "bricks and mortar" institutions remain the foundation for basic and higher education worldwide, online education has gained immense popularity among people from different walks of life across the world. There may be different reasons for this: accessibility, quality or flexibility in schedules, and many more. Some universities, such as AIU, even provide mobile-phone based learning through course pod casts etc.
