The State of West Virginia is in the South region of the USA. West Virginia was part of Virginia when the latter joined the Union in 1788. By the early 19th century farmers and industrialists in West Virginia considered themselves unrepresented in the state legislature, which was dominated by the slaveholding plantation-owners of the east. Extractive industries, manufacturing, services, agriculture and tourism are West Virginia’s most important economic activities. The state’s principal farm commodities terms of value, are broilers, cattle and calves, turkeys and dairy products. Corn for grain and silage, apples, soybeans, and lambs also contributed to farm income.
