The Commonwealth of Virginia (nicknamed `Old Dominion’) is in the South region of the USA. Virginia has a mild, humid climate. Temperatures are cooler in the mountainous west. Government, manufacturing, finance, services, insurance and real estate and wholesale and retail trade are vital components of Virginia's gross state product. The service sector, principally business and professional services and activities connected to communications and information management, is the largest employer. Government is also a major employer, partly owing to the number of military bases in the state, and partly because many state residents work for federal government offices in Washington, DC.
Virginia is one of the 50 states of the United States of America, located on the Atlantic coast of the southern United States. The roots of modern Virginia date backs to the origin of the Colony of Virginia by means of the Virginia Company of London. Colonialism, agriculture, and slavery played important roles in its economy and politics for the first time. Virginia has an economy with several important settlements, including the Pentagon's Defense Department and various federal agencies in the North of the state military bases in Hampton Roads as well as production agriculture significantly.
