The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (nicknamed “Little Rhody” and “The Ocean State”), is the smallest of the 50 states. One of the six states comprising New England, it lies in the Northeast region of the USA and is bordered by Massachusetts to the north and east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Connecticut to the west. Block Island, the largest of the 38 offshore islands, is 14 km (9 miles) south-west of Point Judith; Narragansett Bay, extending inland for 48 km (30 miles), contains three of the largest islands of the state: Rhode Island itself (also known as Aquidneck), Prudence and Conanicut. In the state's southern and eastern coastal region there are sandy beaches, marshes and lagoons.

Despite its name, most of Rhode Island is actually on the continent. The name of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is the fusion of two colonies, Providence, Rhode Island and plantations. Plantations of Providence are the name of the colony founded by Roger Williams in the region now known as the city of Providence.
