The State of Oregon (nicknamed `The Beaver State’) lies in the West region of the USA and is bordered by Washington to the north, Idaho to the east, Nevada to the south-east and California to the south-west. The sandy beaches and promontories of the Pacific coast rise to the Coast Range and Cascade Mountains, the latter containing Oregon's highest point, Mount Hood, a dormant volcano, at 3,424 m (11,235 ft). Between the two ranges are fertile valleys, the largest being that of the Willamette River in the north. East of the Cascades is an arid plateau consisting of undulating hills in the north, rising towards the Wallowa and Blue Mountains in the north-west of the state. In the south-east is the Great Basin, a bare, dry region.
