The State of Maine (nicknamed “The Pine Tree State”) is in the Northeast region of the USA. It is one of the six states of New England and is the most easterly state in the Union. Maine is bordered to the north-west, north and east by the Canadian provinces of Québec and New Brunswick, to the south and south-east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south-west by New Hampshire. In the west and centre of Maine is the high land of the Longfellow Mountains, the northernmost range of the Appalachian chain, reaching 1,606 m (5,268 ft) at Mount Katahdin. North of the mountains is a region of high plateau.

Maine is one of the states that make up the United States and gets its name from the French province of Maine. It is situated in the area of New England, located in the north-eastern United States, bounded on the north and east by the Canadian province of New Brunswick, south to the Gulf of Maine, west to New Hampshire and northwest with the Canadian province of Quebec. Part of the northern border is defined by the river Saint John and Saint Francis, the river St. Croix is part of the south-eastern border, the river and Salmon Falls, the south-western boundary. Maine, along Louisiana is one of the only U.S. states with a strong tradition and presence in French.
