Louisiana is one of the states that make up the United States located in the southern region of the country on the delta of the Mississippi River. The state borders on the west by the state of Texas, north to Arkansas, east to Mississippi and the south by the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana has a particular culture due to the French colonization, and to a lesser extent, to the Spanish. The most widely spoken languages are now English and Spanish, as the vestigial French (a dialect known as Cajun) has lost most of its speakers. Worse fate has touched the Spanish vestigial, brought in the eighteenth century by immigrants from Andalusia and Canary Islands, which is now virtually disappeared.
The State of Louisiana (nicknamed “The Pelican State”) is in the South region of the USA and is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east and Texas to the west. The state lies entirely within the area known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. In the south-east of Louisiana is the Mississippi Delta, which features Lake Pontchartrain, a coastal lagoon covering 1,619 sq km (625 sq miles). The region of coastal lowlands stretching west from the Delta consists of flood plains, bayous and marshes.
