The State of Iowa lies in the Midwest region of the USA and is bordered by Minnesota to the north, Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south and Nebraska and South Dakota to the west. Iowa's intensely cultivated rolling plain gradually rises in altitude from the south-east to the north-west. The land is drained by two major rivers: the Mississippi, which forms the eastern boundary of the state, and the Missouri, which provides the southern two-thirds of the western boundary. Numerous tributaries running across Iowa flow into these two rivers. The state has a moist, continental climate.

The first Europeans to explore the region currently are the U.S. state of Iowa were French Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette in 1673, and described the region as green and fertile.
