After the War of Independence United States, Delaware was the first U.S. state to accept the finalized constitution of the United States of America on December 7, 1787. Therefore, the state is known nationally as The First State (First State). The name comes from the state of Delaware River, as it is located at the margins of this river and its estuary, Delaware Bay.
