The State of Alabama (nicknamed `The Heart of Dixie’) lies in the South; it is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south-east and Mississippi to the west. In the south-west Alabama has a short coastline on the Gulf of Mexico. Alabama’s principal economic activities are manufacturing, mining and quarrying, agriculture, wholesale and retail trade and finance, insurance and real estate. The current Constitution of Alabama is the state’s sixth and became effective on 28 November 1901. Constitutional amendments proposed by the Legislature have to be permitted by a three-fifths’ majority vote in each house.
The State of Alabama lies in the South region of United State of America. Alabama have 23 state parks and five state park resorts, covering a total area of some 48,000 acres. State parks and recreation areas were visited by 2,961,000 tourists in 2005, and the national park service areas received 790,039 recreation visits in 2006. The state's Gulf of Mexico beaches attract thousands of visitors; Point Clear, in particular, has been a well-known tourist destination since the early 19th century. Fishing is a popular activity in the state, and the Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo at Dauphin Island is a major attraction.
