Surin is one of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces of Surin province include Buriram, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham and Sisaket. To the south it boundaries Oddar Meancheay of Cambodia. The former syllable Sur- stems from the Sanskrit phrase Sura (Devanagari) significance God (cf. Asura), and the phrase In-tar from Sanskrit is Indra (Devanagari). Hence the title of the province literally processes Lord Indra. In the northern of the province is the valley of the Mun river, a tributary of the Mekong. To the south of the province is the Dongrek hill chain, which furthermore types the side towards Cambodia.

Surin, the province of Thailand was initially an significant part of the Khmer domain (its center at Angkor within show day Cambodia).
