Khon Kaen is the second largest in the north-eastern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces (from north clockwise) Nongbua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Buriram, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Phetchabun and Loei. Print province shows stupa (tower) of Phra That Kham Kaen, which are believed to contain relics of Buddha. Two trees are shown on both sides, one of the Banyan Tree (Ficus Benghalensis), the other Golden Shower Tree (cassia fistula). Hee River runs almost through the all central regions of the province.
Khon Kaen is the central part of Khorat Plateau. Hee River runs through the province. The first area of the city was founded in 1783, when Rajakruluang settled there with 330 people. King Rama I made the first governor of Rajakruluang in establishing tighter connections with Isan region. The main city was transferred six times, while in 1879 it reached its modern position at Nuang Kaw. Khon Kaen was the administrative center in the early 20th century.
