Chanthaburi is a province of Thailand. It is located in the eastern part of Thailand, on the border to Battambang and Pailin in Cambodia and on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. In the neighboring province of Trat and Rayong in the east, Chonburi, Chachoengsao and Sa Kaeo. Chantha word comes from the Sanskrit word meaning Chandra Moon, and storms with a Sanskrit word meaning the city of Puri. Thus, the name literally means city of the moon.
After the Paknam crisis in 1893, French colonists and troops occupied Chanthaburi, returning it in 1905 when Thailand abandoned the possession of the western part of Cambodia. A significant minority of Chanthaburi native Vietnamese nationals who arrived in three waves - first in the 19 th century during the anti-Catholic persecution in Cochin China, the second wave came in the 1920's until the 1940's, fleeing from the French Indo-China, and the third after Communist victory in Vietnam in 1975. Thus, the city of Chanthaburi Chanthaburi is a bishop since 1944.
