Amnat Charoen is one of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces, Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon and Mukdahan. In the east it borders Salavan Laos. The province is located in the Mekong River Basin. A long sidewalk along some of the river allows people to enjoy the view. In the dry season, from February to May, the water in the Mekong River, falls, and also allows the islands to appear. Such well-known islands include Kaeng Tanglang on Si Sombun village near Amphoe Chanuman and Kaeng Hin Khan at Ban Hin Khan.
Amnat Charoen became a town during the reign of King Rama III. She was the first run of Nakhon Khemarat, and then from Ubon Ratchathani. It became a province in its own right on 12 January 1993, when she was separated from Ubon Ratchathani. Therefore, one of three provinces, the youngest of Thailand, together with Nong Bua Lam Phu and Sa Kaeo.
