Chongju, a city in the Republic of Korea, is the capital of North Chungchong province. It is located about 70 miles (113 km) southeast of Seoul and is a marketing and processing center for rice, soybeans, cereals, and tobacco, all of which are grown in the surrounding area. Chongju's industries include the brewing of sake (rice wine), textile milling, meat-packing, and canning. Population: 586,700 (2000 census). In 1895, the province has been replaced by parts of Chungju (Chungju-bu) to the east, Gongju (Gongju-bu) in the center, and Hongju (Hongju-bumodern day Hongseong county) in the west.
Chungcheong (Chungcheong-do) was one of the eight provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty. Chuncheon were located in the southwestern part of Korea. The provincial capital was located in Gongju, which was the capital of the kingdom of Baekje from 475 to 538. In 1896, Chungju and eastern Gongju Districts were reorganized in North Chungcheong Province, and Hongju and western districts were reorganized Gongju in South Chungcheong Province. North and South Chungcheong now part of South Korea.
