The Dhofar (Arabic ظفار Zufar), the region is in southern Oman, on the eastern border with Yemen. Its mountainous region covering 99,300 km2 (38,300 square miles) and has a population of 215,960 in 2003 census. Dhofar is the largest city in the region of Salalah. Historically, it was the main source of incense in the world. However, frankincense is now mostly used locally. (Somalia is now the leading exporter.) While the Arabic culture of Oman have come to live in the province, especially in larger towns and cities.
Dhofar is a historical region in southern Oman, extending from Cape Ash-Sharbatāt in the coast of the Arabian Sea in the south-west of the border with Oman and Yemen. The northern boundary of the region has never been defined, but in general, including the territory is the Wadi Mughshin, located about 150 miles (240 km) inland. Northeast of Dhofar is a large desert plain of pebbles and sand dunes that contribute to the isolation of the northern region of Oman.
