West Coast is a region of New Zealand located on the South Island. It comprises three districts: Buller, Westland and Gray. Its main towns are Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika. When New Zealanders talk about "the Coast", they usually refer to this region. The nice people in the region becomes "Coasters". "Westland" is used by some to speak of the entire west coast of the South Island, including Fiordland, but the inhabitants of the coast never use that word in this way. The Fiordland is part of the Southland region.
The region of West Coast is situated in New Zealand and extends from the edge of Kahurangi north to the tip of Awarua south, a distance of 600 km. To the west lies the Tasman Sea to the east and the Southern Alps. Most landscapes are more rugged, but there are also some coastal plains. This is one of the only areas in New Zealand still have large areas of forest, elsewhere, such as the plains of Canterbury, the forests were felled to make room for businesses or agriculture.
