Tasman is a region and territorial authority in New Zealand located in the northwest corner of the South Island. Its regional council is located in the city of Richmond. The name of this region comes from Tasman Bay, discovered by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. It is bordered by the West Coast, Marlborough and Nelson. It covers an area of 9 771 km ². Mount Owen is the highest, amounting to 1 825 meters. To the west there are mountains and hills Matiri Tasman and the Tasman Sea, north bays Tasman and Golden, in the eastern region of Nelson.
Tasman is the region situated in the northwest corner of New Zealdn. The landscape of Tasman is varied, ranging from mountains, valleys and plains in large rivers (Buller, Motueka, Aorere, Takaka and Wairoa), and long beaches on the Tasman Sea and the Bay of Tasman.
Tasman is home to three national parks: the Abel Tasman National Park (the smallest of New Zealand), National Park Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Park. The first human presence date from the twelfth century and was mainly concentrated along the coast, where food is abundant.
