Taranaki is a region of New Zealand located in the southwest corner of the North Island. It is named after Mount Taranaki and covers 7 258 km ². The region is centered on Mount Taranaki, a volcanic peak. The large bays north-west and south-west of Cape Egmont are called the North Taranaki Bight and South Taranaki Bight. Taranaki is the region situated in the southwest corner of New Zealand. The name Taranaki is derived from the mountain of Taranaki which is a perfect cone in shape. Its last eruption dates from the mid eighteenth century. Mount and its environs form the Egmont National Park.
The region is exceptionally fertile thanks to the abundant rainfall and rich volcanic soils. The dairy industry is predominant, the milk factory near Hawera is the second largest in the southern hemisphere. There are also reserves of oil and natural gas on land in the territorial waters.
