The Free State of Saxony is a federal state of Germany, located in the southeastern part of present-day Germany. It is the tenth-largest German state in area (18,413 km²) and the sixth largest in population (4.3 million), of Germany's sixteen states. Saxony has the majority vivacious economy among the former GDR states. Its economy rises by 4.0% in 2006, making it the fastest growing region in Germany. However, unemployment relics elevated, and investment is scarce. Due to the mistaken practice of "Saxon dialects" in colloquial lingo, the Upper Saxon characteristic has been added to distinguish it as of Old Saxon and Low Saxon.
The Free State of Saxony is one of the most dynamic economic regions in East Germany, in particular in IT; precision watch-making and car-making are typical of this new gearing, symbolized by the restored Frauenkirche in Dresden’s Baroque center. As in the past, Saxony’s culture is highly influential in the world of music, represented by the Semper opera house in Dresden and the almost 800-year old Thomaner Choir in Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach was once a cantor. Bach at least has a serious rival in the person of Richard Wagner.
