The Vaucluse is a department in the southeast of France, named after the famous spring, the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Vaucluse is bounded by the Rhône to the western side and the River Durance to the southern side. Mountains inhabit an important proportion of the eastern half of the department, with Mont Ventoux also recognized as “the Giant of Provence”, takes over the countryside. The Vaucluse département has a relatively large exclave inside the Drome department, the canton of Valréas (Enclave des Papes). Significant urban centres include Orange, Carpentras, Avignon, Cavaillon, and Apt.

The Vaucluse department is situated in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur area. It has borders with Var and Bouches-du-Rhône (south), Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (east), Gard (west), Drôme (north). The department is named subsequent to a village located in the area. The community ‘Vaucluse’ has been named Fontaine-de-Vaucluse since 1946. The name of the Vaucluse department is derived from the Latin lingo and means vallée close. Avignon is the governmental centre of the department, Apt and Carpentras are the subprefectures. Vaucluse possess 537,500 populations called the Vauclusiens. Major urban centers are the administrative centres Orange and Cavaillon.
