Territoire de Belfort administrative division of eastern France, formed from the southern portion of the department of Haut-Rhin, the rest of which was ceded to Germany by the treaty of Frankfort (1871). A component of the natural highway open from Frankfort to the Mediterranean, the Trouee has from earliest times provided the route for the migration from north to south, and is still of great commercial and strategical value. Woodland covers a further third of the surface; the chief trees are firs, pines, oak and beech; cherries are largely grown for the distillation of kirsch.

The Territoire de Belfort is a department in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France. The department has a region of only 609 km² (235 sq. miles), being the fifth least of France (after Paris and its suburbs Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, and Val-de-Marne). Another third of the surface Forest is covered; the chief trees are firs, pines, oak and beech; cherries are largely grown for the distillation of kirsch. Meadow and forage crops occupy the remaining third of the Territory; barely horned livestock’s are raised to any extent. The capital of the Territory is Belford, which encompasses one arrondissement.
