The Somme is a section of France, located in the north of the country and named after the Somme River. It is part of the region of Picardie in France. The Somme was the site of numerous grand battles in World War I and the department is home to a number of military cemeteries and to several major monuments commemorating the many soldiers from various countries who died on its battlefields. St Valéry sur Somme is a charming little port with fortified walls and old entry gates with lovely views of the vast stretches of sand across the Bay.

The Somme department is located in the Picardie region and the bordering departments are: Aisne, Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais and Seine-Maritime. Although now the region is calm, it was the site of many great battles in World War I in 1916, and Somme has a number of monuments to soldiers from various countries. The countryside in Somme is varied with chalk cliffs and woods and its towns and villages along the valley are very pleasant. Amiens is the centre of the Picardy region and is a centre for tourism but also an industrial town in Picardy.
