Meurthe-et-Moselle is a subdivision in the northeast of France named subsequent to the Meurthe and Moselle rivers. Meurthe-et-Moselle was formed in 1871 at the end of the Franco-Prussian War from the parts of the former departments of Moselle and Meurthe which remained French territory. Meurthe-et-Moselle is fraction of the district of Lorraine and is surrounded by the departments of Meuse, Vosges, Bas-Rhin, and Moselle and by the nations of Luxembourg and Belgium. The financial system was extremely dependent on mining until the 1960s. There are salt, iron, and lime mining sites.

Meurthe et Moselle is one of the four departments of the Lorraine region, the other one being Moselle, Meuse and Vosges. It is situated in the central point of the Lorraine region, and has boundaries with Luxemburg and Belgium. The governmental centre of the department is Nancy, with 107,000 residents. The subdivision gathers around 723,000 inhabitants in 594 towns and villages. The department was named following the two main rivers that run through the territory: the Meurthe River and the Moselle River. However there are other rivers in the department and as a result the department was formed by rivers on the trot through immense plains and valleys.
