Loire is an administrative department in the east-central fraction of France occupying the River of Loire at the upper reaches. Loire is fraction of the present administrative area of Rhône-Alpes and is surrounded by the departments of Rhône, Isère, Ardèche, Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Allier, and Saône-et-Loire. The residents of the department are called Ligériens. Many attractive towns and cities can be found in the Loire Valley and all through the Pays de la Loire and innermost regions. The vine is grown in the valley of the Rhone, on the lower slopes of the Forez hills and on the hills west of the plain of Roanne.
