Loire-Atlantique is a department on the west coast of France named after the Loire River and the Atlantic Ocean. Loire-Atlantique is amongst the unusual 83 departments created through the French upheaval on March 4, 1790. Originally, it was named Loire-Inférieure, but its name was changed in 1957 to Loire-Atlantique. The area was originally fraction of Brittany, and contains what many people still consider to be Brittany's capital, Nantes. This department was unconnected from Brittany in 1941 by the Vichy government. There is a well-liked campaign to have it reintegrated in Brittany.
Loire-Atlantique is a department on the west coast of France. The Loire-Atlantique brags 68km of coastline with authentic ports - such as Le Croissac and La Turballe where oyster production & tourism supports the local economy. Nantes is the capital of the Loire-Atlantique and not devoid of good reason. It is a lively centre of Art-Nouveau squares, churches & museums and chic bars and restaurants. Inland there are parks, gardens, rivers & forests and offer activities from canoeing in the Vallee du Don or playing golf on one of the department's 9 courses.
