It was formed from part of the previous province of Languedoc. Hérault is part of the present region of Languedoc-Roussillon and is simultaneously with the bureaus of Tarn, Aude, Gard, Aveyron, and the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lion) on the south. The residents of the department are called Héraultais.

The department is very geographically diverse, with beaches in the southern, the Mountains of Cévennes in the north, and agricultural land in between. The standard daytime temperature is near 25-30 grades Celsius in July and August and 8-10 grades Celsius in December and January.
