Haute-Saone is the perfect image of a rural district between the Jura and the Vosges mountains.
The River of Saone streams through more than 100 km of its terrain and gave the department its name. It is one of the greatest rivers for boating. The River of Ognon and the many lakes provide a large collection of sports for water lovers, such as boating, canoeing, sailing, swimming and fishing. From its wide forests to its hills, from the Champ minor vineyards to the Fougerolles cherry orchards, the Haute-Saone can be revealed by the mean of hiking, biking or horseback riding throughout a network of over 1,000 km of sign posted trails.
Haute-Saône is a French department, named after the Saône River. At the commencement of the 19th century the district was among the one of the ten most industrialized in France. Many of these industries now belong to the historical heritage of the district. Haute-Saone has preserved some of its dissimilar crafts, such as lace making in Luxeuil, glass blowing in Passavant-la-Rochere. The architectural prosperity can be observed in each town and village where churches, castles, thermes, washhouses and fountains evoke its past.
