Finistère is a department of France, situated in Brittany. Agriculture, food processing and different related industries occupy an important place in Finistère's economy. The military presence in Finistère as well as military-related industries such as the Brest headquarters of DCNS utilizes an important number of the department’s population. Finistère is the area where Breton survives most strongly as a spoken language. Diwan is the name of Breton-speaking schools, Divyezh and Dihun. One of the highlights of summer in Finistère is the "Festival des Vieilles Charrues" held in Carhaix-Plouguer where foremost international stars attract tens of thousands of spectators.
Finistère is Brittany’s mainly westerly department and shares its borders with the Côtes-d’Armor and Morbihan departments. Finistere, meaning ‘Land’s End’ is Brittany’s most westerly department. The Breton individuals have a very distinct identity, and in Finistere live the proudest Bretons of them all. In spite of official joining the rest of the country some 600 years ago, the locals still retain their own customs, dances and songs. The department is populated by a large proportion of sailors and fishermen, and much of the local folklore involves the sea.
