The French department of Calvados is part of the region of Basse-Normandie in Normandy. It takes its name from a huddle of rocks off the coast. Calvados fits in to the region of Basse-Normandie and is surrounded by the departments of Eure, Orne, Seine-Maritime, and Manche. At the north is La Baie de Seine, part of the English Channel. At the east of Calvados the Seine River forms the border with Seine-Maritime. Calvados embraces the Bessin area, the Pays d'Auge and the area known as the "Suisse normande". Most of the prominent places in Calvados department include Deauville and the previously stylish 19th-century private club resorts of the coast.
The department of Calvados is a French department in the region Basse-Normandie. The department was created after the Revolution of France, on 4 March 1790, pursuant to the Act of 22 December 1789, from a part of the former province of Normandy. The climate of Calvados is very different depending on where it lies and, some thirty kilometers from the coast. There was a time to call it "Lower-Orne ', before choosing its current name. Calvados is part of the Region of Lower Normandy. It borders the departments of the Eure to the east of the Orne south and the English Channel to the west, while its northern side is the coastline of the English Channel.
