Ardennes is a department in the northeast part of France named after the Ardennes area. The department is one of the unusual 83 departments formed at the period of the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was entitled after the Ardennes hills, which are located in northeast France, southern Belgium and Luxembourg. The department is bounded by the French departments of Meuse, Marne, and Aisne and by Belgium on the north. Located in the Ardennes uplands on the border with Belgium, the department of Ardennes includes many areas of very dense woodland. The principal river is the Meuse River

Its rounded summits are detached by shallow depressions containing peat bogs, from which augments many rivers that cut narrow and sinuous valleys. This High Ardennes shapes the watershed among rivers flowing north and west to the Meuse River and south and east to the Moselle River. Heavy rainfall, combined with low clouds, fog, and frost, make the uplands distinctly bleak.
