The department of the Aisne is a French department whose name comes from the eponymous river. The Aisne is delimited by the departments of Nerd, the Somme, of the Ouse, the Seine-et-Marne, the Marne and the Ardennes and the Belgian. The Aisne was one of the 83 departments formed in 1790. Mixture of rural and urban workers, home to some families working in Paris and Aisne has been for many years a department rather left-oriented, with a majority in the General Council of left since 1998 and the majority of seats of members representing the department in the National Assembly.
