The Australian Antarctic Territory (in English: Australian Antarctic Territory) is the part of Antarctica claimed by Australia. It includes all islands and territories south of 60 degrees latitude and between 45 and 160 degrees east longitude, except Adelie Land. Most of the territory close to the coast of Wilkes Land deals. In all the Australian Antarctic Territory covers more or less 6 million square kilometers, corresponding to 42% of all Antarctica which comprises a huge area.
The Australian Antarctic Territory was claimed for the first time on August 24, 1936, although the first Australian base in Antarctica, Mawson, was not established until February 11, 1954. However, since Australia ratified the Antarctic Treaty, its territorial claims are suspended. The Australian Antarctic Division manages the area, primarily through support for various research projects. United Kingdom called for the first time the Victoria Land January 9, 1841 and Enderby Land in 1930. In 1933, a British imperial order transferred territory south of 60 ° S and between meridians 45 W and 160 W to Australia.
